The SCA CTechP Water & Preventative Maintenance Foundation training is a basic technical course for coffee professionals who want to gain a better understanding of water quality, equipment, and preventive maintenance. During this official SCA training, you’ll learn how water parameters such as hardness, alkalinity, pH, and TDS affect extraction, flavor, and the lifespan of coffee equipment.
You’ll work with professional measuring instruments such as TDS meters, titration tests, pH meters, and test strips to analyze and assess water quality. You’ll also learn how various water treatment systems—such as filtration, water softening, and reverse osmosis—function in the specialty coffee industry.
In addition to water quality, there is a strong focus on preventive maintenance of espresso machines, grinders, and coffee brewers. You’ll learn to identify parts, perform maintenance, and identify technical issues early on. Thanks to the combination of theory and practice, you’ll develop immediately applicable technical skills that will help you improve equipment performance and reduce costs.
Laurens DaCosta is an award-winning barista and SCA trainer with over sixteen years of experience. With his practical and inspiring approach, he helps both professionals and coffee enthusiasts take their coffee quality to the next level.
“I usually don’t pay much attention to maintenance, until our espresso machine started malfunctioning more and more often. It wasn’t until this training that it really became clear how much water quality and preventive maintenance affect both the taste and the lifespan of the equipment. Since then, we’ve been checking everything in a much more systematic way, and we’ve had noticeably fewer problems.”
Erik
“Maybe not the most ‘spectacular’ training session, but in hindsight, it was one of the most valuable ones I’ve ever taken.”
Mariska
“As a restaurant owner, I wanted to be less dependent on breakdowns and repair technicians. Thanks to this training, I can identify problems much more quickly and I also know which checks I can perform myself. That gives me a lot more confidence.”
De Linde Restaurant
“Clear explanations and plenty of practical examples from everyday life.”
Jasper
“I never would have expected water to have such a big impact on the taste of coffee. That alone made this training worth it.”
Nina van Rijn
“I learned a lot about filters, water quality, and daily maintenance—things I’d never really thought about before, to be honest.”
Dennis
“Our technical staff and baristas took this training together. That led to much greater mutual understanding and better teamwork on the job.”
Team Roast Lab
“There’s quite a bit of technical content in the training, but everything is explained step by step. That makes it easy to follow, even without a technical background.”
Sanne
“Since this training, we’ve implemented a regular maintenance routine. It’s a small effort, but it saves a lot of hassle.”
